House System
In the Junior School we have four Houses – Stanley, Benson, Wellesley, Apsley. These form the foundation of the whole School structure. House Points, House Challenges, Sports Day, House Competitions and House Captains are all key elements of our structure. In Senior School we use Houses as the pastoral structure. The four Junior Houses become eight Senior Houses
These Houses each have multiple House Tutors and Tutor Groups. At this point in a student’s journey through school, the House, and the House Tutor Group, has become a powerful community, and indeed a family. All students across Senior School work together in collaborative and mutually supportive groups with teachers taking on a very different role from that typically associated with the classroom.
Pastoral Care
Pastoral care is the foundation from which all students can excel in their learning. It is the specific and deliberate act of ensuring both the physical and emotional requirements of each student are met, essential in creating the safe, happy and student-centred ethos we believe to be so important in our school. When children enter our Junior School, their Class Teacher is their key adult, seeking to find out all about who they are, what they are interested in, and what helps them to learn best. In our Senior School it is the student’s House Tutor who takes over this pastoral role, ever more essential as a child grows and develops. The knowledge that these key individuals hold is at the heart of every student’s success – this knowledge enables them to support where support is required, or challenge where this is more appropriate. When mistakes are made, in learning or behaviour, these adults are there to facilitate reflection and discussion, ensuring the greatest of progress is made in all areas of learning and life. Academic success is, of course, of prime importance but the happiness of a student comes first. Their ability to thrive is prized above all things, in an atmosphere of care and contentment.
